Louis, an awkward, ordinary subway worker and frustrated amateur author, dreams of literary fame. But publishers reject his novel about a subway employee who robs the company safe, saying it is too extravagant to be believable. To prove them wrong, he convinces Filippi, a slick, aristocratic gangster, to commit the hold-up described in his book. But Filippi forces Louis to stick to the story and take part in the crime for real.
