John Cassavetes par Thierry Jousse

Sitting at the moviola beside the critic Thierry Jousse, we analyse the cinema of John Cassavetes, from his first to his last work as a director. In this film essay, Jousse’s insight and passion take us inside the creative universe of Cassavetes, a wholly modern body of work, capable of opening up paths that were previously unimaginable, experiments so perfect that they soon became an everyday language, which other filmmakers have made their own so much so that today the cinema of Cassavetes appears to us as a form of classic cinema. Each of his films, which he financed by acting in other people’s films, was an adventure first into life itself and then into cinema, in which the actors themselves are the material for the art, with characters who run away and cannot be entrapped by the frame. Sensual, vital and generous creations by an auteur without rules, who in Gena Rowlands found both a life partner and such an astonishing interpreter that she regularly outshone the all-male group of extraordinary actors (Alan Arkin, Peter Falk, Ben Gazzara, Cassavetes himself) that made up Cassavetes’ “troupe”.
